How the final grade formula works
Your overall course grade is a weighted blend of two pieces: everything you've done so far, and the final exam. If the final is worth 40% of the course, your current grade covers the other 60%. The calculator solves the blend for the unknown:
Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Worked example: you're sitting at 88%, the final counts for 40%, and you want to finish with a 90%. Your current work contributes 88 × 0.6 = 52.8 points. To reach 90 you need 37.2 more points from the final, and since the final is worth 0.4 of the course, 37.2 ÷ 0.4 = 93. Score a 93 and you finish exactly at 90%.
How much do finals usually count?

Reading your result honestly
A required score of 93 is very different from a required score of 99, even though both are "possible." Anything above your usual test average by more than a few points deserves a real study plan, not hope. And when the calculator says a target isn't reachable, believe it — the math doesn't bend. Pivot to the best grade you can still earn (shown in the result), and protect it: a reachable A- is worth more than an impossible A.
The what-if slider is the fastest way to build intuition here. Drag it through the range of scores you realistically expect and watch the overall grade move. Because the final is only a fraction of the course, the overall grade moves much less than the slider does — a 10-point swing on a 40% final only moves your course grade 4 points. That damping is why students who are close to a boundary care so much about every point, and why students with a cushion can afford to relax a little.
Points-based syllabus? Convert it first
Some instructors grade in points rather than percentages — say, 600 points of coursework and a 400-point final. The conversion is direct: the final's weight is 400 ÷ 1000 = 40%, and your current grade is your points earned so far divided by the points possible so far. Once you have those two percentages, the calculator above works unchanged.

How do I find out how much my final exam is worth?
Check your course syllabus — the grading breakdown section lists each category's weight. Typical final exam weights are 20% to 30% in high school and 30% to 50% in college. If your syllabus lists points instead of percentages, divide the final's points by the total course points.
Does this work if my final replaces my lowest test score?
No — this calculator assumes the standard weighted model where the final is its own category. Grade-replacement, drop-lowest, and curve policies change the math, so if your syllabus mentions one of those, treat this result as a baseline and confirm with your instructor.
